(ABC 6 News) – After the top-ranked team in the Class AAA state rankings went down in upset-fashion on Thursday, so did the state’s second-ranked Austin Packers.
The unseeded Delano Tigers upset the second-seeded Packers in the Class AAA semifinals on Thursday, 80-68. The win for Delano followed Columbia Heights’ 71-69 upset win over six-time defending Class AAA state champion DeLaSalle.
“This is basketball, this is what happens," Packers head coach Kris Fadness said. "All you have to do is watch the NCAA tournament to understand that this stuff happens. But you can’t change who you are in one game. We’ve been who we are the last ten years in Austin. Delano played outstanding basketball.”
The Tigers were led by Minnesota Mr. Basketball Finalist and Georgia Southern-commit Calvin Wishart, who led all scorers with 29 points. As a team, the Tigers shot 58% from the floor—Austin shot 41%.
Delano led by double-digits for nearly the entire second-half. Late in the game, Packers senior Moses Issa hit a three-pointer to make it a 67-60 game, but Austin couldn’t inch any closer than that the rest of the way. Offensively, the Packers were led in scoring by Issa (15 points) and Duoth Gach (17). Medi Obang added 11 points for Austin.
Delano and Columbia Heights will play for the Class AAA championship on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Austin will play DeLaSalle on Saturday in the Class AAA third-place game.
