(ABC 6 News) - An Austin man wanted on an outstanding warrant is in custody after a witness says they saw him running from the scene of a garage fire.

Police and firefighters were called to the fire in an alley in the 700 block of 11th avenue southwest around 2:45 Friday afternoon on a report that a detached garage was on fire.

A witness reported seeing 34-year-old Joseph Mallan running from the area at the time of the fire.

Police knew there was a Department of Corrections warrant out for Mallan.

Early Saturday Mallan reportedly went to the Gold Cross Ambulance headquarters in Austin and told the staff he had overdosed. He was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin, then transferred to Rochester for further treatment.

Because of the outstanding DOC warrant, Mallan was kept under police guard until he was returned to the Mower County Jail on Sunday afternoon.

Investigators say the garage in southwest Austin may be a total loss, and the state fire marshal was called to investigate.

Police haven’t yet determined whether Mallan was involved in the fire.
