(ABC 6 News) -- After disappearing while they were on vacation, an Austin man has been reunited with an eagle statue commissioned to honor his 27 years of military service.
After retiring in 2010, Sgt. First Class Scott Wermager had an eagle statue built out of concrete, painted bronze and placed on a pillar in front of his southwest Austin home that he shares with wife Teri.
For years, it sat undisturbed. But when the couple returned from a vacation on July 9, Scott noticed something wasn't right.
"We just kept staring at the empty spot and just couldn't quite believe that it was gone," Teri said.
Neither could sleep that night knowing the eagle was gone, so Teri turned to Facebook, posting a photo and a plea to return their beloved bird that was shared more than 450 times.
That Facebook post caught the attention of Marlene Hannum and Teresa Donovan, who frequently walk through town. The day they saw the post, they made a startling discovery on their walk.
"We were walking along and we both are on Facebook and had just commented about some different things, and we were walking by and here was this eagle that I knew was the eagle on Facebook," Hannum said.
So Hannum reached out to the Wermagers to let them know their eagle had been spotted.
With the help of police, the Wermagers were able to get the eagle back in one piece, just over a day after noticing it was gone.
"They could have stolen anything else from us really, not a big deal," Teri said. "It was just one of those items that had such huge sentimental value."
And being able to find the eagle had a special meaning for Hannum and Donovan as well.
"Teresa and I both have husbands who are retired military, and Teresa has 3 sons and I have a son that was in Iraq and hers were stationed all over too," Hannum said. "So it meant something to us that if we were able to help a veteran, we wanted to help him get his eagle back."
Teri said police have not told her if they think the statue was stolen or by whom, but the family is just happy their priceless possession is back on its proper perch.
