UMR Taking Steps to Join Discovery Square

August 07, 2017 05:52 PM

(ABC 6 News) - A big player in downtown Rochester is taking steps to join Mayo Clinic and acquire space inside Discovery Square.

Right now, the University of Minnesota Rochester has signed a non-binding letter of intent with Discovery Square's developer Mortenson, but no official agreement is in place yet.

The letter allows UMR to have conversations with Mortenson to see if the space available can accommodate the needs UMR wants in Discovery Square. UMR is looking for classroom space, labs and collaborative space because there’s a need for more space as UMR continues to grow.

"Our goal here is to make sure that we are in line with what our students need, what the University needs and that we be good stewards in the money that is entrusted to us by the University of Minnesota," said Director of Marketing and Communications at UMR, John Hachtel.

If UMR signs a lease, they will be the second tenant after Mayo Clinic to join Discovery Square.
