The Importance and Impact of Exercisabilities

November 10, 2017 07:25 PM

(ABC 6 News) - A local non-profit is returning hope to those with physical disabilities.

And to ensure it can provide that help, Exercisabilities is holding its annual fundraiser Friday night at Somerby Golf Club in Byron.

Thomas Buechler, who has been helped by the facility, calls it "God sent."

"I passed out in my driveway and they figured it was from an aneurysm and they called an ambulance,” he said.

Thomas is recovering from a stroke he had in 2013.

Through his sister, he learned about Exercisabilities - a medical fitness, therapy facility in Rochester.

Zach Curry, who is Thomas’ exercise specialist, says he learned about the gym through his sister, “When Tom first came in he had limited movement in his arms. Almost no movement in his legs.  In terms of stability, you know sitting on the edge of a mat was extremely difficult for him."

Fast forward to now, and two years of physical therapy and Thomas is doing much better.

"Rapidly coming around. I've been making leaps and bounds lately," said Thomas.

This week he hit a goal of leg-pressing the most weight he's ever lifted.

"Once he started seeing improvements and even though they were small improvements, he had immediately a 180 on his attitude. He was you know fired up. He was ready to come in. He knew what he was doing was the right thing and he was on the right path,” said Zach.

Zach also says it’s a path to a better life through the power of healing.

"It’s one of the most amazing things to see someone's journey," he said. "To see someone start so low and just to be so lost and confused having something so terrible happen to them and then to see this spark. This spark of motivation. This spark of this isn't it."

Meanwhile, Thomas says he is inspired by the therapy.

“Things just smell better," he said. "I look at the world totally different."
