(ABC 6 News) -- A Mayo Clinic employee allegedly stole more than $300,000 according to an IRS filing for the year 2016.

Mayo Clinic noted in IRS Form 990 a "theft of cash by an employee responsible for handling cash was discovered." The filing goes on to say the estimated loss exceeded $300,000 and there were also tangible items found that could be stolen property.

Mayo says the theft was reported to law enforcement, the employee in question was terminated and "improved cash handling practices were implemented."

A statement from Mayo Clinic spokeswoman Susan Barber Lindquist Tuesday simply confirmed the theft happened in Rochester and it was reported to the FBI, adding "It's an ongoing investigation, so I can't provide other details."

A spokesperson for the FBI says they can't weigh in on pending investigations or even confirm an investigation is taking place.
