Community Comes Together to Help Family After Fire

(ABC 6 News) - After a family in Fillmore county says they lost everything in a house fire early December, they are now grateful to have their community and supporters behind them.

The house caught fire on a Sunday morning and everything inside was damaged by smoke from the fire.

Since then, Kayla Jones, her boyfriend Matt Lastine and their two daughters have received numerous donations.  Kayla says,“People from around Spring Valley that don’t know me, that don’t know Matt, have actually donated most of what we have."

The family’s story has even inspired groups who don’t even live nearby.  Manuel Guajardo, who owns Kasson’s “Sophia’s Thrift Store” has been trying to get in touch with the family in hopes to make a contribution as well.

Guajardo says, “We ourselves have been in a fire before…this store has been in the planning for about two years. We have been going out and buying all kinds of clothes, appliances, and furniture. Anything we thought a family could need."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Kayla and Matt with expenses.  They are also accepting donations at the First National Bank of Spring Valley.
