(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The Southland school board voted to close its sole elementary school Monday night and bring all students under one roof.
The vote to close Southland elementary school nearly brought several school board members to tears. But, they say it's a necessary move to keep the district alive for the future.
The closure is expected to take effect at the end of next school year. Though that date isn’t set in stone.
The board will meet next week to talk about what comes next, and if their long-term plans include building an entirely new building somewhere else. Which could mean the elementary school stays open during construction.
The board also approved a contract with a Wisconsin based survey company to gauge public opinion about what to do next, including whether to build a new campus ahead of a potential referendum in the fall.
