Army Distributes Holiday Meals

(ABC 6 News) – It’s a huge part of the holiday experience, and Wednesday in Austin, families were able to receive a holiday meal.

Hy-Vee’s "Feed a Family" campaign distributed food baskets to families in need. It's a joint project with the supermarket, the Salvation Army and community partners.

They handed out meals to about 550 families.

“When you have to try to figure out how to stretch that budget out for a special occasion it makes it hard, especially when things are very tight," said Lori Espe with the Austin Salvation Army.

"There are families that are challenged with today's economy," said John Gray, chair of the Austin Salvation Army Advisory Committee. "It's the Salvation Army's mission, for one, to help those in need in the community.”

“What this means to me is my kids are going to have a nice Christmas dinner,” Brian Martin told us after picking up his holiday meal. “Sometimes it's kind of hard to manage everything especially during the holiday season, so this is actually  a blessing, it's one less thing I have to worry about for my family to know they're going to have a good meal."

And for Brian kids, the meal comes with a lesson.

"One thing I do teach my kids is if you've got it, help, because there's other families out there that  might not have it as well as you do,” he said.
