(ABC 6 News) -- A Rochester school was put on lockdown Wednesday afternoon following a stabbing in the parking lot.

According to Rochester Police Captain John Sherwin, 26-year-old Wade Smith of Rochester came to Hawthorne Education Center around 2 p.m. looking for a woman he knew.  Captain Sherwin said Smith and the 26-year-old woman had a domestic relationship.

A witness told police they saw the woman and Smith leave the building and get into the woman’s car.  A short time later, the witness said the woman came back into the building with a deep cut on her hand.

According to the woman, a knife was stored in the center console of her car and Smith knew it was there, said Captain Sherwin.  The woman told police Smith was intoxicated, pulled the knife out and stabbed her in the hand.

As a precaution, Hawthorne Education Center was put on lockdown while police responded.  Captain Sherwin said Smith was “non-compliant” and was taken into custody at gunpoint.  Smith is facing a second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon charge.

The woman was taken to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus for treatment.
