Rochester Police Chief Reflects on Career as Committee Searches for his Replacement

March 12, 2018 11:03 PM

(ABC 6 News) -- Rochester Police Chief Roger Peterson only has about one month left before retirement; however, the search for his replacement isn't even close to being done.

An update was provided at the Rochester Police Policy Oversight Commission on Monday night. Peterson said he is not involved in the hiring process, but said the city is reviewing 35 applications.

Peterson took time to thank his department, saying he is proud of his team.  He also reflected on his 20 years as chief saying he's gained a lot of life lessons.

"This community is changing a lot, it requires a lot of changes on behalf of the police department and keeping up with what the community expects, what they demand, what they deserve, is a real challenge," Peterson said.

The hiring committee hopes to narrow the field down to 25 people and schedule interviews for the week of March 26.  There will also be an opportunity for the public to comment on the finalists.
