(ABC 6 News) -- Several Rochester-area groups are banding together to increase voter turnout.

A kickoff event was held Tuesday night for "Give Us the Ballot" at Rochester Community Baptist Church.  Along with registering new voters, the initiative hopes to get people more involved in local government and holding elected leaders accountable.

One newly-registered voter said he hopes his vote can make a difference.

"I want the people from Rochester Minnesota to have a better living place and an environment so that we can improve the issues that we have," said Jamal Ismail.

Communities United for Rochester Empowerment, Rochester for Justice, ISAIAH, and the NAACP are organizing the effort, which targets low and moderate-income voters.

"Five hundred eighty-five million dollars of our taxpayer money is going towards the development in Rochester for Destination Medical Center, yet we have people who are struggling to find affordable housing," said Aleta Borrud with CURE. "This represents a government who is not truly acting for the common good."

The organizations have set a goal of signing up 1,000 new voters.  They plan to hold more community events in the future.
