(ABC 6 News)-- After months of discussion and some frustration with community members, the Rochester City Council unanimously approved the ordinance that gives ride sharing companies like Uber and Lyft the go-ahead.
While a lot of people might use these companies to get around town. One of the major hubs will be at the Rochester International Airport.
"Different options and the ability to at least have those options here in Rochester, move customers that are flying in and out of the airport and around the community in a different way is a positive thing," says Rochester International Airport Executive Director, John Reed.
Just like taxis and shuttles, any ride sharing option will come with a fee to and from the airport.
“It would be a fee of three dollars to drop off a passenger and to pick up a passenger," says Reed.
Some flyers at RST say they like the added convenience of being able to use a service like Uber or Lyft.
"If you're on a time frame, like I say with a conventional cab they may tell you 30 minutes and show up an hour later. Uber tells you 15 minutes, they're here in 15 minutes," says flyer, John Morris.
"I could see a lot of use for people coming in from out of town or something and just want to get a ride to their hotel or whatever, so I think it's a good, a good thing for the airport," says RST worker, Chris Isham.
Assistant City Administrator, Aaron Reeves says companies will be able to start operating in Rochester after applying and getting approval from the city.
As for the airport, they are already getting questions about Uber.
"We do get customers that occasionally ask us or email us, you know, is Uber or any other style of TNC operate in the area. Now the city council has given the community that ability, it's a good thing," says Reed.
The ordinance is expected to be signed by Mayor Ardell Brede by early next week. After that, drivers can start applying through the companies which will also be doing background checks.
