A Rochester man was back in custody Friday after police say he shoplifted at a local business following his release from jail.

According to Rochester Police Captain John Sherwin, 43-year-old Rick Thavong stole hundreds of dollars’ worth of items from Gander Mountain on 55th St. in Northwest Rochester.  Captain Sherwin says the shoplifting happened around 7 p.m. Friday, March 17, the same day he was released from the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center for having meth and other drugs on him during a traffic stop.

In addition to his previous charges, Thavong is now facing a felony charge of possessing burglary tools, and a misdemeanor shoplifting charge.

A Rochester man faces a number of charges after officers discover drugs during a traffic stop and during the booking process at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center.

According to Rochester Police Captain John Sherwin, an officer conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of 20th St. and 3rd Ave. SE around 11 p.m. Thursday, March 16.  When the officer started speaking to the driver, Captain Sherwin says the officer noticed a vial on the steering wheel dashboard that appeared to contain meth.  The driver, 43-year-old Rick Thavong of Rochester was then searched, and the officer found another vial of meth and $2,500 cash on him.

Thavong was taken to the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center.  During the booking process, Captain Sherwin says authorities discovered 23 OxyContin pills, marijuana, and a gram-and-a-half of powder cocaine, all inside Thavong’s underwear.

Thavong faces a number of charges which include third degree controlled substance, fifth degree drug sales, fifth degree drug possession, and introducing contraband into a correctional facility.
