(ABC 6 News) -- A Rochester man was taken into custody Friday after allegedly beating a toddler with a belt.

According to Rochester Police Captain John Sherwin, the grandmother of the 2-year-old and the suspect were at the apartment where the child lives on Northern Hills Drive NE around 8:47 p.m. on July 14.  The grandmother called the child’s mother after she heard the child being whipped with a belt, said Captain Sherwin.  The mother returned home and found the 2-year-old with 8-10 inch welts on the child’s back.

The woman called the police and 38-year-old Hanot Rodriguez of Rochester was arrested.  Rodriguez is charged with malicious punishment of a child and domestic assault, both gross misdemeanors.
