Puerto Ricans in Rochester Help Victims of Hurricane Maria

September 25, 2017 10:44 PM

(ABC 6 News)-Rochester locals are doing their part to help victims days after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, killing at least 10 people.

On Sept. 20 Mariela Rivera and her husband Hector watched as Hurricane Maria destroyed a place they once called home.

They moved to Rochester from Puerto Rico 7 years ago, but the ones they love most were in the middle of a disaster.

"As of now I’ve been very fortunate that my family is doing good, they are actually trying to help other people, so right now the initiative is to help my country," said Rivera.

When the storm passed, they wanted to donate whatever they could to help not just their own family but others back home.

Once word got out other Puerto Ricans living in the area like Luz Milbeth Cumba Garcia became involved.

Garcia said although her family is safe her childhood home is gone.

"When I first learned what was happening I was in a state of shock, I didn’t know what to do and I focused all my energy on looking for ways to help," said Garcia.

So far they have collected boxes full of diapers, clothes, and food, but Rivera said they still have a long way to go

“We're going to make it happen, Minnesota is going to be a part of this national event," said Rivera.

People in Puerto Rico are still in need of help.  If you have any items you want to donate, we have information on where to drop off donations on our website under featured links.
