(ABC 6 News) -- During 2016, Rochester City Council meetings had been dominated by a couple topics – Food Trucks and Uber, but at times with little progress; Monday’s city council meeting was a bit different.
“It looks like it's a step in the right direction now we are encouraging some more entrepreneurship in town and I think next year we'll have a more vibrant food truck community,” said owner of Twisted Barrel Wood Fired Pizza, Derrick Chapman.
Chapman held off on getting a license to operate downtown because he felt the price was too steep.
Monday’s changes to the food truck ordinance included lowering the price to operate downtown to $900, down from $1500. Other changes included adding more locations to the late night eats – A couple spots on 1st Avenue and another closer to Mayo Clinic for patients and employees who work late. The late night hours are also extended to 2:30 a.m.
Council members are crediting high community support throughout the year for these changes.
"It's good to see that people are getting activated by these certain topics," said Chapman.
Also Monday, the council approved ride sharing services to start operating in the city – This also after months of discussion.
"You can't be afraid to compete. I feel confident in the business platform we have," said owner of Reed’s Safe Ride, Peter Bartz.
Reed’s Safe Ride offers a bit different service than a traditional taxi or Uber, but just like in any business, Bartz says a little competition never hurt.
"I think that the local companies are a little nervous. There is a chance they can take a large share of the pie if you will. But you know what, the rest of us have been around we have an established client bases and we're ready to compete," Bartz added.
The city council needs to go over the ride sharing service ordinance one more time in their first meeting in January before it’s official – Uber has said that it can be up and running shortly after an ordinance is set.
