Rochester Businesses Strive to Stand with Mayo as #1

August 08, 2017 06:40 PM

(ABC 6 News) - Mayo Clinic's Rochester campus is once again ranked as the best hospital in the country by U.S. News and World Report, a rank area businesses are also inspired to strive for.

“A lot of people come to the clinic with their family and they like the comfort of coming into a family owned shoe store and getting that care, the same kind of care that Mayo provides where you know they really go the extra mile on giving service, which we try to do as well," said Anthony Verderame, Owner of O&B Shoes.

Verderame said about 60-70 percent of the customers serve are in town either visiting or receiving treatments at Mayo Clinic.

According to Tuesday's annual U.S.  News and World Report, that service is part of what has earned Mayo Clinic another number ranking as the top hospital nationwide.

"Over the last couple of years they've moved to more objective measurements of safety and quality as they perform the ranking and as they've done that, Mayo Clinic has reaffirmed its position as the leading healthcare institution,” said John Wald, Medical Director of Public Affairs and Marketing at Mayo Clinic.

Wald also said that is what Mayo is vigilant about, and reiterates to its teams daily, "What makes this very special for us and our staff is the fact that it recognizes our integrated care model. It recognizes everyone in our staff. From the person that greets you at the front door to the surgeon performing your surgery to the nursing team."

That's the same kind of quality and service that patients and visitors also expect from O&B Shoes.

“A lot of people, they'll be in between appointments and running from building to building and their feet will hurt so they'll come to us as kind of a rescue to make their feet happy so they can continue on to each appointment," said Verderame

"The last thing I want to do is take a cab and go find a shoe store. So I want to be able to you know go to my hotel and perhaps do some shopping and this was really close," added Ed Gibbs, a Rochester visitor.
