But at Tuesday's meeting of the Freeborn county board, it was a *first*.

"Today we're recognizing Freeborn county as a Purple Heart county" said Ryan Sabinish of the Military Order Of The Purple Heart.

"It's actually going to be the first Purple Heart county in the state of Minnesota."

“It's probably the award that most service members would choose not to receive" said Freeborn County Veteran’s Service officer Ron Reule during a presentation at the county board meeting.

“How you receive a Purple Heart medal is you're wounded in combat by the enemy” Ryan Sabinish explained.

"We just want to get the word out and make people aware of the sacrifices made" said Purple Heart recipient Duane Hodge.

“We have 26 living Purple Heart veterans in Freeborn county" Ryan Sabinish said. Most of them were injured in Korea or Viet Nam.

"I was in Viet Nam in ‘69” wounded veteran Duane Hodge said. “I happened to be in a bunker, I just got into it and a mortar round followed me in."

“I was wounded March 23rd, 2007 in Iraq” Ryan Sabinish said. “I took shrapnel to the arm. I had severe blood loss and had to be Medivaced to the nearest base and Purple Heart veterans, we live with the sacrifice of war every day because we can feel it in our bodies."

To earn the designation, cities or counties must pass a resolution, supporting their Purple Heart veterans.

Veterans Service officer read from the county’s resolution:  "Freeborn County does hereby adopt the standards necessary to be designated a Purple Heart county."

The first in Minnesota.
