Healthier New Year? Yes, You Can

January 01, 2018 07:13 PM

(ABC 6 News)- If you've kicked-off 2018 with a pledge to walk more and eat more vegetables, you're not alone.

But pledging and doing are two different things.

"The first week is always the hardest. It really is" Joe Tscholl told us.

Regardless what you call it ... exercising more, getting in shape, living healthier …

"It's what you eat, what you drink and the amount of exercise that you put into your daily routine" said Joe Tscholl, owner and head personal trainer at Snap Fitness in Albert Lea ….

... many of us put it at the top of our New Year’s wish list.

"They start it off and they think hey, they're going to get that easy fix, make a big change and they find out it's a lot harder than what they realized" Joe Tscholl said.

So the first step toward keeping that resolution *could* be more mental than physical

"It's changing that mind, that mentality to say I can do this. I know it's going to be tough" Joe Tscholl explained.

“You just need to stick with it and kind of keep  making small goals for yourself and attaining those small goals" added Mollee Tscholl at Albert Lea’s Snap Fitness.

"The number one thing I would say” Joe Tscholl offered as help for keeping your resolution alive, “is find somebody to do that challenge with you, that journey with you."

And if that's not an option: "Get something that's going to help you stay motivated, whether it's a team, a class, an app on your phone."

And understand that that there's no *one size fits all* plan for living healthier.

"Every body is different, every metabolism is different, every age is different  so it's really knowing your own body” Joe Tscholl said.

“And also you want to create something that they're going to enjoy and stick with  so maybe somebody likes to run  or somebody prefers group fitness classes" Mollee Tscholl added.

And there IS light at the end of the tunnel: "If you get past that first week, get into the second, the third week” Joe Tscholl said, “once you get that routine going, once you get it in place...easier and easier every single time.”
