(ABC 6 News) -- Chief Roger Peterson publicly announces his retirement after 20 years of service.
Peterson was sworn in as police chief in July of 1998 and with the Rochester Police department since 1981.
From a gang problem in the 80's and 90's to the explosion of drugs and overdose deaths on our city streets, Chief Peterson has led his department through many changes in his tenure.
His last day on the job is April 25th.
As for his replacement.... A department official says applications are already being filled out and the city will have the task of finding a new chief either from the pool of applicants within the department or they could hire from an outside law enforcement agency.
He first mentioned it in August that he was retiring in the upcoming year.
When asked why he chose now to make the announcement he simply said...it's time.
