Pay it Forward: Marty Cormack

May 26, 2017 09:18 AM

(ABC 6 News) -- A local Rochester man is making sure those who are in need in the community are being cared for.

“He really has the heart of compassion and I think that’s what this award is all about,” said Sister Marlys Jax.

Marlys is talking about Marty Cormack, a man who spends countless hours each week volunteering his time to help meet the needs of others, particularly in southeast Rochester.

“I realized I needed to do something more about care for the poor, and just when I discerning that, the first conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was being formed at my parish back in 2010,” said Marty.

Marty is not only the volunteer director, but the district council president of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in southern Minnesota.

“One of the things we do in the society is we become friends to the poor. We go to their homes and we find out their needs,” said Marty.

“He has a heart that meets their heart, and that is extremely important. He makes no judgment, he’s very unselfish himself,” said Marlys.

Through all the work he does for those in need, Marlys nominated Marty for the ABC 6 News Home Federal Bank Pay it Forward award.

We found Marty at Lourdes High School, where he works full-time as the director of technology. The students and staff gathered for convocation, but Marty did not know what was happening next.

“We’re gathered here today to congratulate one of the Lourdes family who goes the extra mile to help others and I’d like to call Marty Cormack forward,” said Marlys.

After receiving the award, we asked Marty what he plans on doing with the money.

“I was immediately planning to give it to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul,” said Marty.

Marty said the money is equivalent of two or three home visits. The money can also help with rent, utilities, food and much more.

“There’s a saying that says in order to get to heaven, you have to have at least one letter of recommendation from the poor, and I would have to say Marty has lots of them,” said Marlys.
