(ABC 6 News) -- This week's ABC 6 News/Home Federal Savings Bank Pay it Forward recipient is using her experience to help others.

"She is someone who is incredibly compassionate about kids. Not just kids with autism, but kids in general," said Chris Grev of Mary Barinka. Grev nominated Barinka for the award.

Mary and her husband have three daughters, the youngest daughter was identified with autism at age 2.  "When Meg was diagnosed, Mary just jumped both feet into it," Grev said.

"My personal experience and the knowledge I've gained and the ability to see the impact that was made with my own child by information and support and modification of things... and so that drives me to want to have that for more kids," Barinka explained, as she spoke to the Austin Rotary Club.

"Mary is compassionate, loving, she's incredibly smart," Grev said. "She's fiercely loyal. I think she is an absolutely fabulous advocate."

Barinka was recently named Austin's new Community Autism Resource Specialist. One of her priority initiatives is making Austin an autism-friendly community.

"So if we can broaden that knowledge and understanding and make that the acceptance and understanding for a broader population of people, our whole community becomes more autism-friendly," Barinka explained.
