Osage Prom Goes On Despite Winter Blast

(ABC 6 News) -- Osage High School students Katie Hoppel and Zach Duren spent months preparing for prom, and they were ready to spend Saturday night dancing the night away.

"I've had to go through a couple vests and a couple ties trying to match her dress," Duren said.

Unfortunately for them, Mother Nature had other plans. Snow and wind forced the school district to do something many people said has never happened -- postpone the spring dance.

"We've actually asked a lot of local people in the history of the district they've really never had to move or change the prom due to snow in the springtime," Superintendent Barb Schwamman said.

School officials began looking at alternatives late in the week once the impact of the storm became clear, Schwamman said. They ultimately decided to move prom by one day to avoid much of the snow while not having to take down all the decorations that were already up.

Before the dance, senior Desiree Chanel, sophomore Chase Halbach, and their friends said it's certainly not what they expected but it won't stop them from making memories.

"It was nicer last year, but I mean the weather's not going to stop anybody," Chanel said.

"We're gonna have some fun dancing," Halbach said.

While the storm resulted in some last-minute changes, Superintendent Schwamman said the community came together to give students a night to remember.

"We've been blessed, truly blessed this community has rallied around the Sunday," she said. "Our hairdressers opened up for the students today, our restaurants were wonderful and worked with everybody."
