(ABC 6 News) -- The Cavallaro family in Oronoco is without a home after a fire engulfed their home Tuesday night. It was around 6:30 p.m. the fire department reached the home on the 500 block of Zumbro Hills Drive SW.
Fire fighters left the scene around midnight believing the fire to be under control. Around 7:30 a.m., neighbors reported seeing flare-ups, and the department has been at the home monitoring the scene on and off since.
The State Fire Marshal is investigating, but due to the cold and windy weather conditions, and ongoing fire in the basement, the process is going more slowly.
“The roof collapsed, the floor collapsed, the basement has collapsed, and now we have all these layers that have collapsed so there is fire underneath the wood and we’ve been throwing water, we’ve been throwing foam, trying to suffocate it and put it out…but it still has a pathway and this wind, yesterday and today, is just not helping us,” says Oronoco Fire Chief, Dan Sundt.
ABC 6 News spoke with Bernard, a member of the Cavallaro family, who is currently staying at a neighbor’s home with his wife. His two daughters are sharing a home with another neighbor down the street.
“It’s neighbors like this, that open their doors….It’s unbelievable,” Bernard said when asked about the community outreach.
The Cavallaro’s are currently in contact with their insurance company that is attempting to locate a rental in Pine Island.
A neighbor has asked ABC 6 News to share that donations for the family can be dropped off at either Salvation Army in Rochester, or at Casey’s General Store in Oronoco. For questions regarding clothing sizes, people can contact Jessica Jacobson at (507) 269 2373.
A YouCaring page has also been set up for the family by neighbors.
