(ABC 6 News)-- Future scientists in Austin had a strong showing at the last weekend's regional science olympiad.
Eight Austin students won medals and move onto the state competition next month.
Science Olympiad tests teamwork, along with science knowledge and takes classroom work to a new level.
“For example, you'd probably assign somebody who took AP chemistry to material sciences, because you need a lot of chemistry knowledge. and you'd probably assign somebody who's doing really well in math to Fermi questions because you need to be good at number crunching," said Austin student Eric Yang.
He and his partner won first place in Fermi questions - which involves crunching large numbers like calculating the stars in the universe.
Rochester Century took first place in both varsity and junior varsity divisions.
