(ABC 6 News) -- A tight-knit neighborhood in Mason City is remembering one of their own after she died in a fire Friday.

The Mason City Fire Department responded to the fire at 927 N. Tyler Avenue shortly before noon to find fire and smoke coming from the back of the house. During a search of the home, firefighters found the victim's body, officials said.

One neighbor described the victim as like a grandmother to her and her family, while another said they would wave when the saw each other outside.

Neighbors Peggy and Norman Hastings, who have lived in the neighborhood for more than 40 years, shared what they saw when they looked out their front window as the fire spread.

"I was in the back room on the computer and he saw it and called me out here and we could see the smoke and flames and went out there and it was really billowing then," Peggy Hastings said.

Peggy said making matters harder for their neighborhood was the fact that another neighbor had died in her sleep earlier in the week, leaving two holes in their close community.

Reached on Saturday, fire officials said more information is expected to be released Monday.
