(ABC 6 News) - A Mower county victim has lost $4500 in a telephone scam.

The Mower County Sheriff’s Office says the victim got a call last week from the conman.

During their conversation, the victim revealed to the scammer that he had done online banking in the past.

It opened a door for the conman to access the victim’s savings and checking accounts and alter the numbers.

The conman then told the victim that money had inadvertently been added to one of the accounts.

The scammer explained that the money could not be refunded through a check, and the victim was told to instead purchase Walmart gift cards and provide the serial numbers to the caller … which the victim did.

Investigators remind anyone contacted in such a way to never reveal sensitive personal or financial information unless YOU initiate the contact or know exactly who you’re dealing with.
