(ABC 6 News) - The warmth is here, for now, but the snow is far from gone and street maintenance crews in Rochester are taking full advantage of what Mother Nature has to offer.
“It's warming up, nature is helping us out. The bond between the pavement and the compacted snow and ice is loosened and our plows can be really effective of scraping that precipitation off,” said Megan Moeller the Communications Coordinator for Rochester’s Department of Public Works.
It's a carefully created dance between city maintenance crews and Mother Nature that changes as much as the temperature.
“If it gets too cold traditional rock salt isn't going to work so then it's a waste of money, and it's a waste of time for crews to be putting it out there and then that's a waste of product because when that snow melts it's going to wash right into our surface waters and be a pollutant,” said Moeller.
Right now is also the time of year when drivers are dealing with the winter hitch-hiker none of us want on our cars, road salt.
According to Greg Austin the Owner of Advantage Custom Paint, “The salts and stuff that they use on the roads to keep the roads safe to drive on, unfortunately, it's really corrosive for our vehicles and it's really important to wash your vehicle as much as you can, getting the underbody clean.”
Moeller adds,"It's getting those expectations in line of what our road conditions are going to be. It might just take a little longer depending on what nature is dealing with us but slow down and drive to the conditions."
So now, it's all about letting Mother Nature take care of what she created.
