Sheriff's Department Earns Rare Designation

November 29, 2017 07:26 PM

(ABC 6 News)- There are only a couple dozen of them in the country.

The newest agency to receive the designation is right here in southern Minnesota ... and it *could* mean our kids are safer.

"One of the challenges is time's not on our side" Freeborn County Sheriff Kurt Freitag said.

In cases where every second counts, the sheriff's department may have just gotten a few more seconds.

“We have to get on it immediately, we have to get our resources  deployed immediately and we have to start as efficiently as possible and we've got to do it all right now" Sheriff Kurt Freitag said.

The department has just become a member of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's "Missing Kids Readiness Program". It meant specialized training for all members of the department ... from dispatchers to deputies officers ... from the organization that *pioneered* the training.

"Part of speeding up the process is making sure everyone is working the same procedure, same direction, following the same protocol" Freeborn county deputy Dale Glazier said.

“We learn investigative techniques, best practices and we also adopted a model policy that they've developed through their years of experience and with that, that qualified us to join this group" Sheriff Kurt Freitag added.

It also gives the department access to the resources of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children

"They have access to data bases that the average person wouldn't even think of which could help us narrow down to like 15 or 20 suspects in the area where we should probably start looking" Sheriff Kurt Freitag said.

And that can be crucial when every second counts.

"Whenever you're dealing with missing, abducted, exploited children time is of the essence" Deputy Dale Glazier said.

“Statistics show that if law enforcement is able to respond as quickly as possible and as efficiently as possible, it really ups the chances of us finding that child” Sheriff Kurt Freitag added.
The Freeborn County Sheriff’s department is only the third agency in Minnesota to earn the designation.
