Next Chapter Ministries builds 'The Refuge"

September 18, 2017 07:11 PM

(ABC 6 NEWS) - Next Chapter Ministries has made its mission to build positive and loving relationships with individuals, as well as families, with a history of crime. Part of the goal has been to create homes within the Rochester community that provide the resources and tools to re-enter society after incarceration, or to avoid a life of crime altogether.

Among these homes now stands “The Refuge”. The house is located near many of the Next Chapter Ministries Facilities in Southeast Rochester, and will now be a touching stone for at-risk youth and teenagers impacted by crime.

“We serve youth that have been impacted by crime, which means incarceration or projected incarceration is or was a factor in their family dynamic,” explained Courtney Dugstad, the Teen Director at Next Chapter.

The program “The Refuge” focuses on youth and teenager self-worth, life skills, and dealing with many forms of trauma.

“We will be doing girls group and boys groups that specifically address trauma, past trauma, current trauma…and promote healing.”

To make this youth-focused home possible, Next Chapter Ministries teamed up with Word of Life Church. It has leased the home out to the organization for possibly the next five years.

“Our site director and some volunteers are doing about $42,000 worth of work in this home, so what that does is it offsets the cost of what we would pay for this,” said Next Chapter Ministries Executive Director, Tierre Webster.

Much of the work done on the home since July was performed by volunteers and funded by public donations. The space is set to officially launch towards mid-October.

Those interested in making donations or volunteering can find that information here.
