(ABC 6 News) -- People who are transgender can enlist in the military come January 1st said a Washington, D.C., District Court Judge.
The Federal Court clarifying the US Military must move forward with accepting recruits while the Courts debate President Trump’s plan to ban trans service members. Hannah Tiede has more with the reaction from locals advocating for equal rights.
“It's awful to think that such oppression has to happen for people to want to stand up,” said Vangie Castro.
Castro is a board member of Gay & Lesbian Community Services in Southeast Minnesota. As a person who identifies as gender non-conforming, Castro joined a protest in Rochester in late July ... responding to Trump's plan to ban transgender individuals from the US military. “Women in the military, trans folk in the military - there always has been this historical trend of people who are marginalized - and then overcoming it.”
There were similar protests across the country after the President tweeted the announcement.
At the time, those in favor of the President's announcement cited cost as a reason for the ban. “The concern here in the House was whether or not the military will be forced to pay for these surgical procedures,” said the Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, on July 27th, 2017. “I share those concerns.”
Two Federal Judges have since ruled the way Trump announced a ban violated the constitutional rights of current members and prospective recruits. Monday, one of the Judges; Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, clarified the ruling that the government must allow transgender people to enlist beginning January 1st.
“I think it's a correct Judgment,” said Castro.
“It doesn't detract from any type of military readiness,” said Rochester Transgender woman, Jessi Wangen. “It doesn't affect cost, or at least it's negligible from the broad military cost that is out there.”
We reached out to the U.S. Army for comment, but haven't yet heard back.
The feeling from those advocating for transgender rights ... things are moving in the right direction.
