(ABC 6 News)--Mayo Clinic announced a $217 million dollar investment into Saint Marys campus to not only expand, but modernize the campus.

Those who live, work and get treatment in Rochester say this expansion is more than just adding bricks to a building.

"It’s pretty amazing, I would say even as a kid it's pretty rare not to see a crane over there," says Canadian Honker General Manager Nick Powers.

Powers looks out at Mayo Clinic - Saint Marys campus every day from across the street.

"Saint Marys does some amazing things and a lot of miracles," says Nick.

One of those miracles is Bailey Gray from North Carolina.

"Saint Marys has and the doctors and nurses have saved Baileys life," said Miranda Gray, Bailey’s mother.

Miranda has been bringing Bailey to Rochester every three to four months for the last six years.

"We found out Bailey was diagnosed with Adrenolukodystrophy," said Miranda.

The only option to stop this rare terminal brain disease from spreading was to get a bone marrow transplant.

"Usually by the age of 10 kids have already either passed away with the disease or you're unable to stop the disease," says Miranda.

Now 16 years old, Bailey is still fighting, but he's alive and has found a second family in Rochester.

"It just hits home that, you know, maybe somebody else can benefit as much as we have," said Miranda.

The project will add three floors to the Generose building, adding 150,000 square feet, finish work on East Tower floors seven through ten, renovate and expand neonatal and pediatrics services, and update the cardiovascular disease IN.

"The opportunity here is to continue with the good work that we've been doing for over 100 years and hopefully allow more patients to come and be able to be taken care of by our great staff," says Medical Director for Mayo Clinic Hospital Operations, Dr. Robert Cima.

Construction is set to begin this year and is estimated to take about five years to complete.
