(ABC 6 News) - UPDATE: Medica and Mayo clinic announced Thursday that Medica is acquiring Mayo Clinic Health Solutions (MMSI), forming a new business arrangement for the organizations.

"For many years, Mayo Clinic and Medica have each worked to advance health care, improve the consumer experience and drive innovation in health care delivery, technologies, and tools,” said John Naylor, Medica president, and chief executive officer. “Today, with Medica’s acquisition of MMSI, we can bring greater capabilities and flexibility through new technologies for customers.”

“Complementing each organization’s strengths is important in this decision,” said Kedrick Adkins, chief financial officer, Mayo Clinic. “This new arrangement offers technologies and opportunities to explore that can benefit patients and clients.”

Thursday, Mayo Clinic told ABC 6 News the transition will affect around 200 MMSI employees. Those employees will have the option to move to other positions within Mayo Clinic, or stay on to work with Medica; there was no mention of layoffs.

According to Mayo Clinic, this is one solution to increase access to patients who have complex medical conditions and illnesses, patients should not notice any difference during the change-over process. They plan to make this arrangement a seamless transition over the next 2 years. Today's Business Wire press release says the changes will be effective by the end of 2017, and financial details aren't available at this time.
