(ABC 6 News)--Mayo Clinic is once again recognizing the power of diversity at the 2017 Supplier Diversity Summit.

Last year Mayo Clinic bought goods and services from more than 6,000 minority, veteran, and women-owned businesses in Minnesota, Florida, and Arizona.

"We want to be able to take the spending that Mayo does, which from a supply chain standpoint is a fairly significant number and be able to give opportunities to businesses of all sizes," said Stephanie Matejka, Director of Mayo Clinic Supply Chain Management.

In 2016, Mayo Clinic across the country paid around $520 million to diverse and small suppliers.

"They're all interested in being able to figure out how they can grow their own businesses," Matejka said.

In Rochester alone, the hospital increased its total spending with diverse suppliers by 24% from 2015 to 2016.

In that same time, Mayo Clinic increased spending for women-owned businesses by 17% and 10% for minority-owned businesses in Rochester.

"We want to ensure that the businesses that we do business with are also representative of the community that we live in," said Matejka.

"I feel very lucky," said Rochester Home Infusion founder and CEO, Joselyn Raymundo.

Raymundo falls under all three categories at the summit- female, minority and veteran.

"The message that I really try to deliver is that all we need is a fair playing field,” said Raymundo.

Raymundo said other business owners, like her, are not asking for special treatment.

"We are here to do a good job, we are here to help and all we want is a fair playing field to be given a chance to actually compete," said Raymundo.
