Mayo Not Letting Go of Albert Lea Facility

July 18, 2017 09:27 PM

(ABC 6 News) -- On Tuesday, Freeborn County Commissioners met with representatives from Mayo Clinic ahead of a consolidation between the Austin and Albert Lea facilities.

At the meeting, Mayo said it is not considering completely shutting down, or selling the building in Albert Lea.

The clinic will move its Intensive/Special Care Unit (ICU), major surgeries and childbirth centers from Albert Lea to Austin. Clinic officials continue to say duplication of those services in both communities does not make sense.

Dr. Bobbi Gostout from Mayo Clinic tells ABC6 News, "We have to make sure that each doctor has the best chance to provide care for the most number of patients," said Mayo Clinic Vice President Dr. Bobbi Gostout.  "Our best information is that 91% of the patients that are served here in the Albert Lea campus reside in or very close to Albert Lea. But, for the additional 9% we know that there is additional travel involved. "

The meeting room was also filled with more than 100 local residents that were not swayed by this argument.

Mariah Lynne is the co-chair of ‘Save Our Hospital’. She says, “The lens we are looking through is the lens of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Freeborn County and our surrounding counties and our surrounding citizenships, paying attention to what their needs and desires are," said Mariah Lynn, co-chair of the 'Save Our Hospital campaign.  "But the lens that they are looking through is the lens of Mayo Clinic and the Mayo Clinic Health System."

Worth-Betco’s Director of Economic Development, Teresa Nicholson, says, “We have some gaps in healthcare already and this will just aggravate that further. If here in Albert Lea there's no inpatient services there is a three county area of 48,000 plus people, without an inpatient hospital facility," added Teresa Nicholson.

The ‘Save Our Hospital’ group will continue to meet at the Albert Lea American Legion post on Sunday evenings.
