(ABC 6 News)-- The convention center at Mayo Civic Center is a few months from opening, but Friday, ABC 6 got a look inside.

The new convention center is home to the largest ballroom in Minnesota. It seats 4,000 people for meetings and speakers and 2,000 for banquets. There are also 14 new meeting rooms that can be used for conventions, daily meetings and socials.

On top of that, there’s also a banquet production kitchen as well as two smaller kitchens to allow food to always be served hot.

"Extremely exciting for us, but also for the community as people drive by now they're seeing a more finished building on the outside. Now we're able to let them see what's on the inside, so pretty exciting time for everyone involved," says Managing Director, Andy Krogstad.

The expansion officially opens to the public April 1st, and the public art piece will be put in place sometime in the spring.
