(ABC 6 News) -- Mason City has selected current Keokuk, Iowa, city administrator Aaron Burnett to fill the city's open administrator position.

Burnett, an Iowa native, has worked in Keokuk since 2015. Prior to that, he spent 5 years as the city administrator in Humboldt.

Mayor Bill Schickel said Burnett visited Mason City last week to meet with city leaders, and shortly after that negotiations began to offer him the job.

The city council still has to approve Burnett's hiring, which is on Thursday night's council meeting agenda.

Reached by phone Monday, Burnett told ABC 6 News he expects to be on the job by the end of June.

Burnett said economic development and revitalization will be among his top priorities, citing experience in working with developers to address blighted properties in Keokuk.

His experience will also benefit a planned revitalization effort on the north side of Mason City, Schickel said.

The position has been vacant since former city administrator Brent Trout took a job in Topeka, Kansas, late last year, Schickel said.
