(ABC 6 NEWS)- A prestigious honor Monday for Austin-based Hormel Foods.

For companies, it's a designation that means "support." And the latest to earn the honor is Hormel Foods.

"We've been designated a Yellow Ribbon Company," Hormel's Jim Fiala said.

"We are honored and humbled by this designation, and we hope it inspires others to attract and retain veterans," added Hormel's Jim Sheehan.

The state has established rigorous requirements companies have to meet to earn the designation.

"From veteran recruiting, hiring and retaining to looking at, identifying all military-connected employees,  so not just those who have served but the moms and the spouses who are in your employee," said Annette Kuyper of the Minnesota Department of Military Affairs.

"You're struck by the story of the founder, George Hormel," said General Jon Jensen of the Minnesota National Guard. "In 1898 when three of his employees joined the local national guard unit in response to the Spanish American war  and he made a promise to these three employees in 1898, he gave them $10 and the promise of a job when they returned."

"You have such a long tradition of supporting our troops," said US Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., in a recorded video greeting. "And this award isn't just about your history of military support, but also your future engagement."

"It also challenged your team to look at what areas  could we even raise the bar  and I'm so impressed with the great ways that you've done that looking into the future, hearing from your veteran employees  and your military family employees that these are ways we could even do it better," said Annette Kuyper of the Department of Military Affairs.

"It's about the future for us the ability to hire, retain and engage veterans as employees," said Fiala.

"Thank you for your dedication to our veterans, thank you for your dedication to our service members,  and thank you for your dedication to our military members," said General Jon Jensen.

Hormel is the 60th Minnesota company to earn the "Yellow Ribbon Company" designation.
