Journey to Growth Visits 'Biggest Little Town' in the Region

October 21, 2017 04:03 PM

(ABC 6 News) -- Friday morning, leaders from across Southeastern Minnesota boarded a bus and headed to Harmony to see how the biggest little town in the region has prepared for an expected population boom and what other larger cities can learn from them.

With the growth of Rochester due to Destination Medical Center, you might think all sectors of business would be booming but there are issues like child care shortages and lack of affordable housing that the small towns are facing just like the more urban pockets of Rochester.

"We need to think differently about economics, we need to start thinking differently about our regional economy, we are all in this together and we are stronger as one voice as opposed to a bunch of little voices all throughout the region,” said Heather Holmes, project director at Journey to Growth -- an organization to help build and grow Southeast Minnesota.

Steve Cremer, owner of Harmony Enterprise, Inc., decided to use his company as a way to open more job opportunities for the community.

He also got his family involved to help which resulted in more housing developments and a new day care.

“So our commitment to our community to grow by doing the day care center and our housing development, it’s just to help provide good jobs, good paying jobs and still live in a small town,” said Cremer.

While Mayo Clinic makes Rochester the top destination for medical purposes, Harmony can boast of being a destination for suburban living.

Journey to Growth members say they were excited by Friday’s presentation and are looking forward to sharing these ideas with city officials
