In-Depth at 6:30: Local Gymnastic Coach Reacts to Video of Cheerleader Forced Into Splits

August 24, 2017 10:53 PM

(ABC 6 News) – There is nationwide outrage over a recent video showing a high school cheerleader being forcefully pushed into doing the splits.

In the video, the teen is being pushed down by her cheer coach and team members from a Denver, Colorado high school.

The girl's mother says seeing the video of her daughter in excruciating pain brought her to tears.

Kathy Nelson, the owner of Kaats Gymnastics saw the video and called it horrific.

"If a child doesn't have the flexibility, you need to use their own body weight and their own time to be able to get to that stage and not have somebody force you into anything that you can't, that your body is not capable of doing," said Nelson.

She also says she would never force her team to do anything they wouldn’t want to do.

Brianna Ryan, a member at Kaats Gymnastics says the video gives a bad view of the sport.

"It beats the purpose of what gymnastics really is. And it just shows like other people like oh this sport is not okay and stuff," said Ryan.

The coaches and several school administrators have been put on leave over the video.

Police are also investigating.
