(ABC 6 News)--Celebrities shone a national light on social justice issues during the 2018 Oscars. Gender equality and diversity were a common theme at the 90th Academy Awards Ceremony, and it's an issue being addressed locally.
The Diversity Council in Rochester is launching a “Social Justice Coalition”. “It’s wonderful to see that same energy exists here in Southeastern Minnesota,” said Executive Director, Dee Sabol.
The Coalition will be made up of about 25 organizations, some of which include CURE, Rochester for Justice and the Sierra Club.
“The idea is really to find out from one another ‘What are you doing? What do you need? What would be beneficial? How do we make sure that we are not at cross-purposes in the way that we are addressing things?’ Certainly not to limit anyone's autonomy,” said Sabol.
“By just coming together, finding ways our work can overlap, it will make us all better,” said Rick Morris with the Sierra Club. “No matter your income level, no matter what country you are from, you can start a family, you can have prosperity, you can have a good education, you can feel safe and you can have healthy air.”
Whether pushing equity in the criminal justice system, with immigration, housing, education, or clean air, “There's a flow between what is going on nationally, what we see at the state level and what is going on in our own neighborhoods,” said Sabol.
The Social Justice Coalition will hold its first meeting on Saturday, March 10, at 125 LIVE from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
