(ABC 6 News)-- The rising drug costs that have been plaguing the United States are also affecting those suffering from the flu virus. The pandemic is still taking lives, but now in the form of patients being untreated due to the high price tag of Tamiflu.

Tamiflu is the antiviral medicine that helps lessens the effects of the flu. The rate of hospitalizations are exceeding past years, and there is not only a limited amount of the pediatric liquid, but its high cost is deterring those who need it.

"It is expensive, and I looked up the prices to have the latest," said Cleveland Clinic Chief Pharmacy Officer Dr. Scott Knoer PharmD. "The standard price is $184 and generic products are available but super cheap either...$132 to $140."

Dr. Knoer said it is important to treat the flu within 24 hours of the symptoms.

The limited supply of Tamiflu is also having doctors encourage to take all the necessary steps to minimize it.

Dr. Pritish Tosh MD at Mayo Clinic recommends rest and drinking enough liquids before waiting until it's too late and having to seek out Tamiflu.
