City Applies for Flood Control Funds

(ABC 6 News)-- A financial boost is needed for the next part of Austin’s flood control efforts.

The city will apply for a grant of $1,125,000 from the Minnesota DNR.

The city would put in an equal amount from Austin’s local option sales tax.

That money would fund the next phase of the North main flood control project, which includes a levy and berms behind the proposed community rec center.

“In some places, it's pretty much nothing more than a little bump, but other places it gets a little more significant as you move to the west of the site but basically it'll protect that site in a high water event," said City Administrator Craig Clark.

Work on that phase of the flood control project is expected to begin once the downtown power plant is removed to make way for the recreation center.
