On December 24, 1953, firefighters Ambrose Riley and Stanley O'Brien tried to rescue John Paul Stephenson, who had fallen through thin ice. All three died.

Sunday, firefighters laid a wreath on the frozen lake to remember their fallen comrades. The event also served as a reminder of the dangers associated with the job.

"The fire service is a calling, and we all know in the same circumstance we would do the same thing that they did. We risk a lot to save a lot," Captain Caleb Feine from the Rochester Fire Department said.

The newest members of the department laid the wreath on the lake, while earlier a bell tolled for each of the lives lost.
