(ABC 6 News) -- A little timid at first, but give him some time and he warms right up.

His behavior is to be expected. Pepper was rescued from an abandoned property in Lincoln County, Minnesota, along with 103 other dogs.

The Animal Humane Society’s Critical Response Team says many of the dogs they rescued are suffering from severe health and behavior issues. More than half are puppies, and six have already died from Parvovirus; a highly contagious disease.

“About 5 to 10 dogs were living in each enclosure which was not very big for them,” says Michele Quandt, the Director of Camp Companion. “So they were living in their own feces.”

Camp Companion in Rochester assisted in finding foster homes for four of the dogs; including Pepper.

“He is getting more curious about everything that is happening around him, which is wonderful because yesterday he pretty much just wanted to lay in a kennel and not interact a whole lot,” says Peppers Foster Mom, Linda Howard.

Pepper has come a long way in the one night that he has been in foster care. The other three might take a bit more time to adjust. “We have one girl, her name is Spunky. She really is completely shut down,” says Quandt. “She is a dog that has really been hit hard.”

For now, Camp Companion plans to take it slow in getting the dogs socialized and ready for adoption.

“No matter what happens with them, I do believe there is someone out there who is right for these dogs,” says Quandt.

For Pepper and the others, the rescue was the second chance at life.

The case will be submitted to the County Attorney for criminal review once the investigation is completed.
