Couple Pleads Not Guilty to Child Abuse Charges

(ABC 6 News)— A Fillmore County couple accused of severely abusing their 5-year-old daughter has pleaded not guilty to all felony child abuse charges as well as charges related to drugs.

The hearing lasted hours—probation officers and the chief of police took the stand and talked about what they saw in the house the day the couple’s 5-year-old daughter was found.

Back in November, 31-year-old Angela Stewart of Ostrander and 36-year-old Ryan Rechtzigel were accused of locking up, starving, beating and even rubbing feces on their 5-year-old daughter. According to court documents-- their 5-year-old daughter was found barricaded in an upstairs room with multiple injuries. Authorities also say they found videos showing the child being taunted and with feces on her face.

Police say they also found meth in the home.

Haley Vold--who tells ABC 6 she used to babysit the kids--says she believes the system has failed the couple’s three kids.

"There should be something done. The county should be working together; people should be working together in every county to make sure that children are safe," says Haley.

The Fillmore County Attorney’s office declined comment, but Haley says she’s hopeful the court will protect all three of the couple’s children, and not just the 5-year-old.

"I hope these kids end up getting a wonderful family. They deserve so much; they deserve a family that can give them the love that they give back because they are the most loving children,” says Haley.

Both parents remain in the Fillmore County Jail. The little girl and two other kids found in the home are now in foster care.

A hearing regarding parental rights is set for January 17th.
