Chatfield’s First Female Firefighter

(ABC 6 NEWS)-   More than a decade ago, Jill Harstad set three goals, one of those was to be a firefighter.

"When we moved back here in 2013, I thought about it for a couple of years and decided 2015 to apply, and I actually got on then and found out two days before they called me that I was pregnant with my our third child so I ended up not doing it,” said Jill Harstad.

Fast forward two years and Harstad once again filled out the application.

"I think it's great that we finally had a woman apply and she got on," said Chatfield Fire Chief Ryan Priebe.

The application ended up making Harstad the first female firefighter in Chatfield.

"I know I have two daughters and when I told them that there's a women firefighter they were pretty excited that was a possibility. I don't know why women never thought that they couldn't apply or be on the fire department," Priebe said.

Despite being the only female on the force, she doesn't notice a difference on the job but she hopes it makes a difference.

"Now that it's kind of out there and I've had people say you know other women say it's something that they have thought of and that they want to do but were too scared to do it or apply to do it," Harstad said.

"I think it is just good for the community that she applied, and we have a woman, and hopefully it will open a door that we will have multiple women on our department."

At the end of the day, Harstad says it's all about setting goals and reaching them.

"Just that if you have a goal or a dream of doing something that anybody can do anything if you set your mind to it and I’m glad that I got to fulfill one of those goals of mine," Harstad said.
