(ABC 6 News) -- After years of helping to catch bad guys and remove drugs from off the streets, the Charles City Police Department is losing an officer.
Charles City Police K-9 officer Midnight is retiring after working for nearly a decade.
Most of the K-9 officers the department has are German Shepherds, but Midnight was special.
He is a black Labrador who started in 2009 as a puppy. His partner, Charles City Police Officer Zach Eckonrod, said they have been inseparable since.
However, because of an arthritic condition, Midnight can no longer work.
Now, Eckonrod will be taking him home so that they can be partners for even longer.
“He’s going to be a house dog now and I’m sure he is going to enjoy that. So he liked coming to work with me, he still gets excited if he sees me coming out the door in my uniform,” said Eckonrod.
The department said they are thankful to everyone in the community for supporting Midnight.
It’s not yet clear if the department will replace him.
