(ABC 6 News) -- An uninhabited home in Spring Valley was destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon, leaving it a total loss.

Spring Valley Fire Department Chief Troy Lange said when firefighters arrived at the home in the 300 block of West Courtland Street, they found the home fully engulfed in flames.

"The floors were falling down and stuff so we could not make entry to it, so it was kind of a defensive fire from the outside," he said.

The fire sent flames and smoke skyward, at times visible from miles away.

Firefighters had to spray neighboring homes with water to keep the fire from spreading.

No one was inside the home at the time of the fire, and no firefighters were injured battling the blaze, Lange said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
